Six Kids, One Adult Hurt in Negligent School Bus Crash in Old Tappan, New Jersey

Date: July 12, 2013

Six children and one adult were injured in a recent New Jersey school bus accident. According to Police Chief Thomas Shine, the accident occurred when the driver of a bus carrying 43 campers between the ages of four and 12 rear-ended a pick-up truck at the intersection of Orangeburg Road and Zotti Avenue in Old Tappan. Following the crash, four of the children were reportedly taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center for medical treatment. Two other campers were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Shine said emergency responders transported the driver of the pick-up to Hackensack University Medical Center with moderate injuries. In addition, paramedics apparently set up a triage operation on a nearby lawn. The school bus driver was reportedly uninjured in the traffic incident.

Thankfully, none of the children involved in this accident were seriously injured. The exact cause of the slow-speed injury accident is currently under investigation by the Old Tappan Police Department. Shine stated it appears that the driver of the pick-up failed to fully communicate his intentions to other traffic. After the collision, the uninjured campers were loaded onto a new school bus or released to their parents.
