Passengers Narrowly Avoid Injury in Negligent Aircraft Collision at Newark's Liberty International Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is reportedly investigating a collision between two airplanes at Newark's Liberty International Airport. According to federal investigators, the wing of a Scandinavian Airlines jet bound for Oslo, Norway struck the tail of an ExpressJet airplane bound for Nashville, Tennessee as the two aircraft were preparing for take-off on a busy runway. The Scandinavian Airlines plane reportedly struck the United Express partner while turning during taxi. FAA officials stated none of the more than 100 passengers aboard the two aircraft were hurt when the two planes collided at one of the busiest airports in the United States.

Following the accident, the ExpressJet airplane was reportedly towed to a gate where passengers disembarked. Additionally, the Scandinavian Airlines jet allegedly sustained serious damage and a portion of its left wing was allegedly torn away. The airline reportedly issued a statement that said the damage was limited to a portion of the wing that aids fuel economy and is not necessary to remain airborne. Scandinavian Airlines is allegedly conducting an internal investigation into how the incident occurred.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in this potentially deadly accident. When two aircraft collide or an airplane is involved in a crash, heavy casualties often result. Determining fault in an aviation accident can be difficult. Airplane accidents may result from pilot error, poor weather conditions, mechanical defects, and other causes. Unlike commercial jets, many small aircraft do not have voice or data recorders installed that may provide valuable assistance to accident investigators. In addition, a detailed examination of the crash wreckage must be undertaken whenever an airplane accident occurs. Because of the complicated nature of aviation accidents, it is important for the victim or loved ones of someone who was killed in an airplane crash to obtain the assistance of a quality personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
