Young Mother Killed in Bronx Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident

In late December, a 21-year-old woman died after she was struck by a hit-and-run motorist in the Bronx. According to police, the woman was hit by a speeding Nissan Altima as she crossed Westchester Avenue near Olmstead Avenue around 6 am. The woman was reportedly discovered unresponsive in the street. Tragically, the new mother was pronounced dead at the scene of the pedestrian accident.

The vehicle that struck the young woman allegedly left debris behind and ruptured its gas tank. Law enforcement officers reportedly followed a trail of spilled fuel south to the Cross-Bronx Expressway where it could no longer be followed. Police are currently in search of the vehicle and the driver who struck the young woman. Sadly, the woman's death was reportedly the fifth fatal pedestrian crash in the Bronx within one week. Previously, an 11-year-old boy and three women in their 30s were killed by motorists.

It is a sad fact that you are placed at risk of being hurt or killed every time you travel on or cross the roadways in New York. All too frequently, innocent pedestrians are injured or killed as a result of the actions of a negligent motorist. Pedestrian accident injuries are generally serious and may include brain or spinal harm, paralysis, broken bones, and untimely death. This case is especially troubling as drivers who are involved in a crash in New York are required by law to stop and render assistance.

If you were injured or a loved one was killed by a driver's negligent act, you may be eligible to recover financial compensation for your medical costs, pain, suffering, lost benefits and wages, and any resulting disability. The victim in a hit-and-run accident may be able to collect damages for any injuries sustained even if the driver who caused his or her harm is not apprehended. In addition to filing an uninsured motorist claim, certain accident victims may be entitled to recover compensation from the New York Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation. The amount of time during which you may file your New York personal injury claim is limited. Because of this, you should contact a skilled personal injury lawyer to discuss your rights as soon as possible after any injury accident.
